What is an infra-red Sauna?

Infrared sauna differ to traditional heat saunas originating from Nordic countries such as Finland approx. 2,000 years ago that use heated stones and fires to help cleanse the body, predominantly by making the body sweat due to the natural heat in the air.

Rather than heat the air, Infrared sauna use light to penetrate the body at different wave lengths that in turn benefit the body in different ways. We use near, mid and far infrared sauna.

Near Infrared – This form of light combines both heat and light therapy, also known as phototherapy. At this level the light and heat is absorbed at the basal layer of the skin and will encourage both healing and revitalisation.

Mid Infrared – This level is a longer light length than near – infrared and penetrates deeper into the body’s tissues. This increases circulation, releases oxygen, promotes muscle relaxation and muscle recovery post exercise.

Far Infrared – The furthest light level in the range as the name describes. The key benefits to the body at this range include removing toxins from the body, stimulating metabolism, and benefiting the cardiovascular system.

By heating the body internally, the natural response is to speed up the blood circulation to help cool the body down, which in turn mimics what happens to your body during exercising. This improves both blood flow in the body as well as circulation and has been shown to increase the removal of toxins from the body, through both sweat as well as improved metabolism.

A commonly cited benefit of Saunas is improved muscle recovery post exercise, this is in part due to the reduction in inflammation that the sauna can encourage.
